“How can communities engage youth in change?” – 4 Tips from Vladyslav Hreziev and #ShoTam

The #ShoTam team recently gathered over 100 heads and deputies from 50 communities across Ukraine to discuss strategies for engaging partners, fostering collaboration between government, businesses, and youth, and building trust with residents.

The panel discussion, “Why does youth ignore the community? Engaging the young generation in recovery,” was moderated by Vlad Hreziev, co-founder of “Zminotvortsi,” who shared essential insights from the conversation.

1. Engage youth from an early age

Start working with young people as early as elementary school to help them develop an understanding of their role, potential, and influence. Provide access to your offices, organize internships, tours, and brainstorming sessions, gather ideas, and conduct surveys. Children need to feel connected to change and their community.

At “Zminotvortsi,” for example, in the “State and Politics” course, we simulate village council meetings to discuss important decisions or personal responsibility for changes in our lives and country.

2. Offer Real Role Models

A positive example can break down even the most ingrained biases. Become a role model or find someone who can be. Show practical ways to make a difference in the local community, achieve success, or return home with new skills and achievements.

We organize “Life of Ordinary People” (LOP) sessions, during which kids meet adults who share their experiences and challenges, showing that anyone can make a positive impact.

3. Collaborate with Government, Business, and NGOs

Stay informed about opportunities from NGOs and government programs, share them with your community, and engage those who have benefited from them to share their stories. Take the initiative to suggest new or enhanced programs and partnerships with local businesses.

No one else will make the best changes for us — we must encourage our community to grow with and for each other.

4. Influence Through Cultural Projects

Cultural initiatives inspire and engage young people. Create opportunities for collaboration and self-expression, support local talents, and build pride in local cultural projects. Call on the community to support and participate so that you can celebrate and value what is uniquely yours.
